Sina Institute organizes the 2nd Palestinian Symposium on Computational Linguistics and Arabic Content (iArabic’2013)

Sina Institute, in Birzeit University organized the 2nd Palestinian Symposium on “Computational Linguistics and Arabic Content” on April 20, 2013, with the purpose of addressing the latest contributions in multilingual/Arabic language technologies to encourage and develop further research; as well as, enabling and reinforcing cooperation opportunities between researchers in IT, linguistics and other related disciplines; to strengthen the relationship between academia and industry for developing smart language-based technological solutions.

Over 15 contributions in the area of Computational Linguistics and Arabic Content were presented in the symposium; by professors, graduate and undergraduate students from Birzeit University and other Palestinian Universities (An-Najjah and Polytechnic University), and Arab Universities (German-Jordanian University) and Palestinian companies (gSoft, MobiStine & Yamsafer). The Minister of the Ministry of Telecommunications and Technology, Dr. Safaa Naser Addeen, and the Consultant of the Ministry of Higher Education, Dr. Karim Tahboub also attended, providing their input on the feasibility of the presented research contributions.

Moreover, two keynote speeches were presented throughout the symposium titled: “Google Translation and Arabization, towards enriching the Arabic content”, which was presented by Dr. Fayeq Owes from Google and “Computing of Arabic Language, Challenges and Opportunities” presented by Dr. Nizar Habash from Colombia University. Dr. Mustafa also presented Sina Institute’s successful efforts in the Digitizing and Integration of Arabic dictionaries.

The symposium concluded with an open discussion in which interesting and useful suggestions, ideas and comments were interchanged among the participants,  creating the platform for further collaborations in multilingual/Arabic language technology solutions among the academia and industry.
