Prof. Yahya wins Google Research Award

GoogleProf. Adnan Yahya has won “Google Research Award” for his  work on a project “Query Pre-processing for Efficient Search in Arabic Web Documents”.

Prof. Yahya’s winning proposal is an adaptation of the Graduation Project “Wojood: A Multi-Lingual Search Engine”, done by the 3 graduate students of the Computer Systems Engineering Department: Ali Al-Salhi, Anwar Hithnawi and Mirna Fawadleh, during the academic year 2008/2009.

The value of the prize is 35 thousand dollars to support research in the project for two years. Google has selected part of the students’ project for the award in line with the company’s interests in the context of the current drive to improve research in the Arabic digital content on the web.

The Google Research Award program is directed towards encouraging interaction between Google and academic staff, and to foster partnerships with universities worldwide. The award aims to support academic research directed at improving the ability to access information stored electronically.
